Make mini water Blobs for backyard playground – Have you ever encountered water blobs? They are water-filled plastic sheets that you can make for your children to slip and slide on for hours of fun in the water. I knew I wanted to try this one from Homemade Toast when we included it in our list of fantastic summer water activities for kids.
I’d only seen water blobs done as a single giant piece of sheeting before, so I thought it’d be great to make small water blobs-one for each child.
- smaller blobs are easier to iron than one large blob
- they fill up faster
- each child has their own water blob to take home.

DIY Mini Water Blobs For Backyard Playground
- At least 4 mm of plastic sheeting
- Duct tape
- Food coloring (blue) (optional – if you want your water to look blue)
- Tape measure
- Iron and ironing board
- Paper parchment
- Toy fish made of plastic (optional – we placed a few inside to make the blob look like an aquarium just for fun).
Unroll the plastic sheets and measure the breadth and height of each child, allowing at least 3 inches for height. For example, because my daughter is 43 inches tall, I cut a 46-inch length for her and her tall pals. My younger child is 36 inches tall, so he and his small companion received 40. “I went with the usual width of 2 feet, which gave me plenty of freedom to walk around.
Place a piece of parchment paper over the seam of the plastic sheeting and iron on low-medium heat (remember, the iron is on top of the parchment paper, not on the plastic).Iron over the seam to melt the plastic, which will fuse the open ends together and prevent leaks.
Make a hole at one end to accommodate your hose.
Place your plastic fish in the bag and drizzle with blue dye (if using).Fill the aperture with water by inserting your hose. Prepare your duct tape and patch the entrance once the blob has filled with water.
Duct tape can be used to repair any leaks. We had a few, and they were alright after being bandaged.
You have completed your assignment. Now it’s time to have some fun in the water!

These small blobs are excellent for resting and cooling off. It’s almost as though every child had their own small pool floaty!
The most enjoyable feature is making the water blobs slippery so you can slide on them. The kids enjoyed it when we doused them with water!
These little water blobs are a lot of fun to produce and quite easy to do. You can arrange them as you wish, for example, side by side to form a giant one, or in a zigzag, slide, or other pattern. The nicest part is that each child received one! It’s an excellent project to tackle at least once this summer.
