How To Make Backyard Birthday Party Fun? 5 Easy Tips

My oldest daughter celebrated her birthday in August. As in previous years, we decided to have a backyard birthday party at home. We are lucky that her birthday is in June and we have always had great weather. Just like this year, by the way. Below are tips on how to make .

The invitations were distributed in time so that everyone was informed about the festivities. Together with my daughter, I came up with a party theme. After googling and pinning, we decided on a photo shoot party. My husband built a sort of stage in the backyard (a few sheets laid on beams, very simple but efficient and most importantly sturdy). We already gathered all the costumes and I came up with another suitable craft.

I also gave the kids a little treat as a parting gift. I filled a kraft bag that my daughter decorated herself with a cute drawing with a pencil, a small notebook, a button with her name on it, and some candy.

But you came here to read the tips! Let’s go!

How To Make Backyard Birthday Party Fun

Tip 1: Be prepared

Preparation is very important. Make sure you know exactly what you are going to do. Have all the materials and food ready in advance so you can join the group during the birthday party itself. Have guests bring something to keep the excitement going.

For example, I let the parents know before the party that they should bring a crazy headpiece. Everyone brought something different, which was very fun to see.

The kids were very curious about why they had to bring it. When they stood in the garden and found the stage with the costumes, they realized.

Tip 2: Decide on a theme and use things you already have in the house.

The theme was clear: pose and show off. We have lots of our clothes, but clothes from mom or dad can sometimes be amazingly fun, too. Of course, the kids also brought their crazy hats, resulting in an extensive collection of dress-up items.

In a flash, the kids traded their clothes for the costume gear and walked around the stage like real models. Meanwhile, I was ready with my camera to take photos. A little music loosened up even the shyest kids and they danced and sang, posed and beamed.

Tip 3: Offer a little craft activity.

After we posed, we started the craft activity. I had provided a basket of washi tape, wool, stickers, and colored paper. I had also cut out frames for a 10 x 15 cm photo from sturdy cardboard. I already had all the materials in the house. Of course, if you do not have such an extensive collection of materials yourself, you can turn to the one low-budget store.

We made a photo frame. It was a fun activity where each child found their way and the results were beautiful to look at. In addition, the crafts also fit perfectly with the theme of the day. I wanted to take a group photo with the kids at the end of the day, but unfortunately, time caught up with me. I sent all the photos to the parents the day after the birthday party.

Tip 4: Decide on a simple snack.

Don’t make it too hard on yourself. Especially not when it comes to food. Last year, we offered hot dogs. It was very easy, you just had to heat the sausages and provide buns. This year, the darling daughter wanted pancakes. That may not seem like an easy thing to do, but it too can be perfectly prepared in advance. I made all the pancakes in the afternoon and put them in the fridge. At 4 pm, all I had to do was heat them and add sugar or syrup. Quickly to the table and everyone is satisfied.

Tip 5: Let it go!

If I may give you one more general tip: LET IT GO! Don’t stress if there’s still clutter lying around somewhere or things aren’t quite going the way you thought they would. The most important thing is that the kids have fun. And that goes so much better when you’re calm yourself.

Make clear arrangements with your offspring beforehand (no one goes upstairs, plays mainly outside, …). The guests will follow the birthday child first and foremost, and if he follows the “rules”, so will the others. And besides, after the backyard birthday party, there is still time to repair the “damage”. So relax, pour yourself a glass and enjoy!

Of course, the latter is easier said than done, but I have to say that now, the third time, it was even more relaxing for me, even if I was more involved in the activities myself as a photographer or craft fairy. Good preparation and a little more letting go work wonders ;-).
