I don’t know about you, but when I think of summer, the first thing that comes to mind is fun outdoor activities for my boys.  And what about my second thoughts? How to keep those outside activities affordable! It doesn’t get much more fun and economical than a tire swing for your kids, my friends! Let me demonstrate how to make one. It could be even easier than you expected!

Tire Swing Accessories

The following are the primary components of a good tire swing:

  • U-bolts
  • Steel chain
  • old tire
  • Drill
  • Thick Nylon Cord or Rope
  • carabiner

You’ll  also need a chain S-hook, a carabiner, and a length of nylon cord. You will need three U-bolts for this project. They are available at your local hardware shop and come with a plate and two hex nuts.  You’ll also require some steel chain. It doesn’t have to be heavy duty, just like what you’d find on a swing set.

To calculate the length required to attach the tire to a tree, multiply the length by three. Divide the chain into three equal parts.
Is it time to replace your vehicle’s tires? You might want to keep one of these! You might be able to get one for free from a neighbor, family member, or your local dump.

How to Make a Tire Swing for Backyard

  1. Scrub the tire thoroughly with soapy water to remove as much dirt as possible.
  2. After cleaning and drying the tire, apply a clear sealant.
  3. Drill a series of holes in the tire’s outer wall to accommodate a U-bolt.
  4. Repeat this process 1/3 of the way around the tire, then another 1/3 of the way around the tire.
  5. Thread a U-bolt through the end of one segment of chain, then thread the U-bolt through one of the tire’s sets of holes. Place the plate that comes with the U-bolt on the U-bolt ends that are poking through the tire on the inside of the tire. Install the hex nuts.
  6. Repeat with the other two sets of tire holes, the rest of the chain, and the other two U-bolts.

We’re Almost Ready To Hang The Tire From a Tree

  1. Find a thick branch that can support about 150 pounds.
  2. It’s also preferable if you can reach the branch using a standard ladder.
  3. Gather the three lengths of chain from the tire and connect them to a chain S-hook to level the tire.
  4. Connect the S-other hook’s end to a carabiner.
  5. We’ll use nylon cord to secure the entire item to the tree. Why?
  6. The nylon cord, unlike chain, will not chew into the tree.
  7. Tie one end of the nylon rope to the carabiner and the other to a tree.
  8. Test the tire swing before allowing your children to use it!

Now that you know how to create a tire swing, we’re ready to have some fun!
